FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION OF THYROID(FNAC)

-

  1.  Thyroid tissue is aspirated using a fine needle and cytological examination of the tissue is done.
  2. FNAC of thyroid is done to detect cancer in a  thyroid nodule and to drain a cyst that may be causing pain or to inject a medication to shrink a recurrent cyst.
  3. Light pressure is applied on the aspiration site after the procedure.
  4. FNAC of the  thyroid is not performed in a patient with overactive thyroid.
  5. FNAC is performed in a doctor's clinic and takes about 20 minutes.
  6. The needle used is a thin fine-gauge needle, usually 25 or 27 gauge 1.5 inch needle.
  7. FNAC can lead to bleeding at the site of insertion ,infection or injury to structures adjacent to thyroid.
